At 3 new clients/month and 6-month retention, your roster settles at 18 — below today's 20. One extra month of average retention is usually worth more than one extra client per month.
The number most coaches never compute
Monthly revenue is obvious. The one that predicts your future is steady-state roster size: sign N clients a month who stay M months on average, and your roster converges on N × M — regardless of where it is today. A coach at 30 clients signing 3 a month with 6-month retention isn't running a 30-client business; they're running an 18-client business that hasn't finished shrinking yet.
That's also why online coaching changes the economics: session-based income is capped by the hours in your week (the rate calculator shows that ceiling), while monthly coaching scales with roster size — and roster size is a retention game. Better systems, longer stays, same marketing.
Frequently asked questions
What should online coaching cost per month?
Common bands: $100–150 for template-based programming with light check-ins, $150–300 for individualized programming and weekly check-ins, and $300+ for high-touch coaching with nutrition, form review and messaging access. Price to the depth of service you actually deliver — underpricing high-touch coaching is the most common mistake, because it caps your roster with clients who each demand hours.
Why does retention matter more than new clients?
Because the steady-state math is unforgiving: your roster converges on new-clients-per-month × months-retained, no matter how big it is today. Three signings a month at 4-month retention holds 12 clients forever. Take retention to 8 months and the same marketing effort holds 24. Doubling retention doubles the business; doubling lead flow just doubles the churn treadmill.
How do I actually improve client retention?
Clients leave when they stop seeing progress or stop feeling seen. The fixes are structural, not motivational: programs that visibly progress, check-ins that happen on schedule, progress data the client can see, and a professional experience — booking, payments, programs in one branded place instead of spreadsheets and DMs. Retention is a systems problem before it's a coaching problem.
How many online clients can one coach handle?
Individualized coaching typically tops out around 30–50 clients per coach depending on service depth — past that, check-in quality quietly collapses. The ceiling moves with systems: templated program blocks, structured check-in forms and batched communication are the difference between drowning at 25 and comfortable at 45.
